Level 3 Applied Diploma 

The Level 3 Applied Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition is equivalent to one A Level. The course will provide you with a broad basis of study for the Food Science and Nutrition Sector. 

The units studied are: 

  • Meeting Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups
  • Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat

And then a choice of either:

  • Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition
  • Experimenting to Solve Food Production Problems
Assessment 
  • Meeting Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups – Internally and Externally Assessed. 105 Minute Exam (90 minutes plus 15 minute reading time), plus an equally weighted piece of coursework which looks at a case study which needs to be analysed and a menu designed and produced for this case study. The exam is set in June each year.
  • Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat – 8 hour timed assessment which is externally assessed.

And then a choice of either:

  • Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition – Internally set and externally moderated research project looking at food science, functions of ingredients and cooking methods.
  • Experimenting to Solve Food Production Problems - Internally set and externally moderated research project looking at current issues linked to issues related to food science and nutrition.
Where Next 

Examples of degree courses which accept the Qualification in UCAS applications include:

  • BSc Human Nutrition
  • BSc Food and Nutrition
  • BSc (Hons) Public Health Nutrition
  • BSc (Hons) Food Science and Technology

It can also help with careers related to the health and social care industry, sports science and fitness industries, and food research careers.

There are also Degree apprenticeships which would accept the qualification such as; food industry technical professional, Dietitian, Environmental Health Practitioner and Research Scientist roles.
